John Lee - Fiddle

john-lee-blackwater-irish-band.jpeg

John Lee is a long-time Aussie resident fiddler, originally from New York City, by way of Georgia, who began his fiddling career at the age of 24, busking in Central Park with a bluegrass singer from Kentucky, eventually meeting up with other trad American folk musicians in the local NY scene. After taking fiddle lessons from well-known bluegrass fiddlers, Bob Green and Marty Laster and banjo from the great Tony Trischka, John left this nascent career to move to Sydney to reconnect with long-lost relatives and make a home in the beautiful Blue Mountains.

His primary playing for the early years was in the Australian bluegrass community, but later found that there was actually money to be made playing country music in pubs and clubs, so soon morphed into a country fiddler.

Through the network of Sydney players and many trips to Tamworth, John connected with other opportunities to play in country, blues and singer/songwriter bands, such as The Change, Gravelyard, Mark Lucas and the Dead Setters, The Zincfingers, Rod Dowsett, Nicki Gillis Band, Craig Morrison, Tall Timbre, Bryen Willems,  and many duos as need would have it.

John found a love for playing Irish songs and fiddle tunes with Blackwater and has played many of their frequent gigs around the Sydney Irish scene.
